How to Make Money on Twitter

Twitter has evolved into one of the most powerful platforms for generating revenue and building meaningful business connections. If you’re an agency owner, product seller, or just someone who’s ready to learn how to make money on Twitter, you’re in the right place.

I’m Daniel Fazio, co-founder of the #1 coaching program for digital agency owners, and today I’m going to walk you through exactly how I grew my Twitter account to over 140,000 followers and made $3 million using it.

Here’s the thing—Twitter is not like Instagram where people flash their lifestyles. Twitter is all about conversations, connections, and value. If you can show people you’ve got something interesting or insightful to say, and if you can do it consistently, this platform can make you serious money.

In this guide, we’re breaking down:

  • How to grow your Twitter followers from zero.
  • Creating engaging content that stands out.
  • Optimizing your professional Twitter profile to convert traffic.
  • Turning your Twitter audience into paying clients.

Stick with me, and I’ll show you how to monetize Twitter step-by-step. Let’s get started.

Step 1: Understand Twitter's Unique Value for Making Money

First things first—Twitter is not just another social media platform. If you’re thinking this is like Instagram, where people flaunt rented Lambos or vacation Airbnb, you’re in the wrong place. Twitter is for those who want to build real connections.

Here’s why: Twitter is packed with intelligent people—the kind of folks who actually want to engage in meaningful discussions. This is where high-level conversations happen, where you’ll find thought leaders, founders, and entrepreneurs sharing insights and valuable content that pushes their personal brands forward.

The bottom line? If you can create engaging content, give value, and document your journey—even if you’re just starting—Twitter can drive serious money your way.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • Don’t fake it: Authenticity wins. You don’t need to rent a Lambo or a penthouse to show off. Instead, focus on sharing real experiences, documenting your journey, and having good take on relevant topics.
  • Intelligent conversations: Twitter users want real insights, not fluff. Whether you’re a beginner or already established, people want to follow those who add value to the conversation.

Step 2: Start With the Basics of Twitter Growth (0-300 Followers)

When you’re starting out, you need to get the basics down before you can grow. Forget the idea of "overnight success." The goal here is steady growth—and the formula is simple.

  • Post consistently: You don’t need to tweet 20 times a day when you’re just starting out. Focus on quality over quantity. Start with 2 solid tweets per day, and make sure at least one of them is packed with value. Pin a valuable thread to your profile that showcases what you’re all about. This thread is your first impression—make it count.
  • Respond to comments and DMs: When someone leaves a comment or sends you a DM, respond. It’s that simple. Engage with everyone because this creates real connections and keeps your audience coming back. Plus, the more you respond, the more Twitter pushes your tweet to the top of timelines, giving you more exposure. Even with 91,000 followers, I still respond to 95% of the DMs I get—it’s that important.

Step 3: Focus on Engagement to Build Momentum

When you’ve got fewer than 1,000 followers, engagement is everything. At this stage, it’s less about how many tweets you’re posting and more about how actively you’re jumping into conversations. Here's how to do it:

  • Prioritize outbound comments: You want people to notice you, and that won’t happen if you’re just talking into the void. Leave 10 outbound comments per day on other people’s posts—but here’s the key: add your own spin. Don’t just rephrase what someone said or comment, “great post.” Add your own insight, a personal story, or an opinion that moves the conversation forward.
  • Target the right accounts: Aim to interact with a mix of accounts based on the following:
    • 10% of your outbound comments should go to accounts with over 10,000 followers.
    • 50% should go to those with 3,000 to 10,000 followers.
    • The remaining 60% can go to smaller accounts (below 3,000). This is how you build real connections.

Step 4: Optimize Your Twitter Profile for Maximum Follows

Here’s the thing—when people land on your Twitter profile, you’ve got seconds to convince them to follow you. So, optimize it right. Don’t overcomplicate this. Clarity is key.

  • Craft a strong bio: Your bio should hit 3 important points:
    1. What your account is about: People need to know immediately why they should follow you. Be direct—no vague nonsense.
    2. Proof of credibility: This is huge. If you have something to show, put it there. Numbers matter—whether it’s followers, revenue, or success stories. If you’ve made money, tell them. If you sell something, it instantly boosts your credibility (weird, but true).
    3. Call-to-action (CTA): This could be as simple as “Follow for insights on growing your business,” or it could be more aggressive—like sending them straight to your landing page or offer. Don’t be shy—tell them what to do.
      • Example: "I help agency owners scale from $5k to $100k/month. $3M in Twitter revenue. Click below for free resources."
  • Pin a strategic tweet: Your pinned tweet is the first thing people see when they check your profile, so make it count. You’ve got two solid options here:
  • A high-value thread: Something that provides step-by-step guidance, like "How I made $1M in sales on Twitter—here’s the breakdown."
  • Direct offer link: If you’re selling something, link directly to it. People love clicking on pinned tweets when they land on your profile, so use this opportunity to convert those clicks into sales or follows.

Pro tip: More people follow you if they see you have something for sale—it’s like built-in credibility.

Step 5: Scale Up Your Activity as Your Follower Count Grows

Alright, so you’ve broken past the 1,000-follower mark—nice work. Now it’s time to ramp things up. You’ve got a base audience, so your focus shifts from just engaging to also pushing more content out there.

Here’s what you need to do:

  • Increase your content output: Start tweeting 5 times per day. I know it sounds like a lot, but more tweets mean more opportunities for people to see and engage with your stuff. On top of that, aim for 2 threads per week. Threads are powerful because they let you dive deep into a topic and show off your expertise. People love them, and they get shared—which means more followers for you.
  • Automate to dominate: At this point, managing everything manually can get hectic. That’s where tools like Tweet Hunter and HypeFury come in. These aren’t just for scheduling tweets—they’re for setting up a system.
    • Schedule your posts: Line up your tweets in advance so you’re always active, even if you’re busy doing other things (like making money).
    • Automate retweets: Use these tools to automatically retweet your best content—what we call “Evergreen” tweets. These are your top performers that get retweeted periodically to keep bringing in engagement.
    • Stay consistent: The key to growth at this stage is consistency. When you’re always there, always showing up on people’s timelines, you stay top of mind.

You’re playing the long game now. The more you tweet, the more you engage, and the more you use automation to keep the content flowing, the faster you’ll grow. It’s all about leveraging your momentum—don’t let up.

Step 6: Leverage Auto DM Strategy to Increase Engagement

This is one of my favorite hacks—and it’s crazy powerful. Setting up auto DMs on Twitter is a surefire way to increase engagement and build deeper relationships with your followers automatically.

  • Set up auto DMs: Tools like Tweet Hunter let you automatically send a DM to anyone who likes or retweets your post. Here’s how it works: You post a tweet offering something valuable—say, a free guide or a video. In your tweet, you tell people, “Like and retweet this, and I’ll DM you the link.” As soon as they do that, the tool shoots them a message with your exclusive content.
    • Why this works: You’re making people engage with your post, boosting its visibility, and at the same time, they feel like they’re getting something personal from you. It’s like getting VIP treatment.

Pro Tip: Add a little FOMO (fear of missing out)—like, “This is only available for the next 48 hours,” or “Get this now before it’s gone.” People love exclusive content, and it makes them more likely to interact with your tweet.

  • Capture emails: Here’s where you take it up a notch. Instead of just sending a link, use the DM to build your email list. Drop in an opt-in link where they have to provide their email to access the content. Now, you’re not just growing your Twitter followers—you’re also growing your email list, which is gold for long-term monetization.
    • Example: “Thanks for the retweet! Here’s the video I promised: [link]. Want more tips like this? Enter your email here, and I’ll send exclusive strategies straight to your inbox.”

This method works so well that it’s almost ridiculous. You’re getting more engagement on your posts, building an email list, and delivering value to your audience, all while growing your Twitter presence.

Step 7: Strategically Buy Retweets (Optional for Early Growth)

Let me be real with you—buying retweets isn’t something I do anymore, but when I was starting out, this was a game changer. If you're still in the early stages and looking for a quick boost, this can be a solid strategy to get your tweets seen by more people.

  • Purchase retweets: When you're sitting on a few hundred followers, your tweets might not get the exposure you need to build momentum. That's where buying retweets comes in. You want to reach out to larger accounts (people with 40,000+ followers) and ask them to retweet your stuff. This pushes your tweets out to a wider audience, and it can skyrocket your visibility.

Pro tip: Look for accounts with around 40,000 followers. That’s the sweet spot. Retweets from these accounts should cost you about $35 each. It's a small price to pay if you're serious about getting your content out there. And yeah, you'll have to space them out—don't spam, or Twitter will catch on.

  • How to find retweets: There’s no official marketplace for this, so you’re going to have to network. Interact with accounts that have large followings. Once you build some rapport, you can slide into their DMs and ask if they'd be down to sell you retweets. Don’t be weird about it—just make sure your content is actually good.

Note: Don’t expect just anyone to sell you retweets. People with large followings are selective. They’re not going to retweet garbage because it reflects on them, too. Make sure your tweets are valuable, well-written, and worth sharing.

In my early days, I was spending up to $6K a month on retweets, and let me tell you—it paid off big time. If you’ve got a high-quality tweet or offer that’s ready to go viral, buying a few retweets can be the jumpstart you need.

Step 8: Master the Different Types of Tweets

Now that you've got the basics down, it's time to level up your tweet game by mastering the three types of tweets that drive growth and make money on Twitter. You need a balanced mix—each type of tweet serves a different purpose, but together, they help you build authority, engage your audience, and convert followers into paying customers.

  • Competence tweets: These are the tweets that prove you know what the hell you’re talking about. You want to show people that you're credible and worth following. Share results, case studies, or just straight-up knowledge bombs that demonstrate your expertise. If you helped someone sign a $10K client or got 50% more website traffic, tweet about it. Competence tweets are all about positioning yourself as someone who knows how to get results.
    • Example: “Just closed a $5K/month deal for a client in less than 10 days using cold email marketing—here’s exactly how I did it.”
  • Engagement tweets: These are your attention grabbers. You want people to like, retweet, and comment—that’s the name of the game here. Engagement tweets can be thought-provoking, funny, controversial (within reason), or just something that sparks a reaction. The goal is to drive visibility by getting your tweet in front of as many people as possible. But don’t overdo it—don’t turn it into a meme account. Always tie it back to your brand and message.
    • Example: “What’s the most ridiculous thing a client has asked you to do?”
  • Sales tweets: This is where the money happens. A sales tweet is a direct call to action—it tells people what to do, whether it’s buying your product, signing up for your service, or checking out your landing page. These tweets should be clear and concise. People shouldn’t have to guess what you’re offering—they should be able to click and buy. Sales tweets might get fewer likes and retweets than engagement tweets, but they convert.
    • Example: “Want to make $10K/month from cold email? DM me ‘client,’ and I’ll show you how to scale.”

The key here is balance. You don’t want to just post competence tweets or just post engagement tweets. Mix it up—about 65% competence, 15% engagement, and 20% sales. This way, you’re building credibility, keeping people interested, and making money all at the same time.

Step 9: Write Powerful, Engaging Threads

When it comes to threads, you’ve got to nail it from the very first tweet. Think of it like this: your opening sentence is your headline, and if it doesn’t grab attention, no one’s going to keep reading. Threads are where you can really flex your expertise, but it all hinges on that first tweet.

  • Hook them with the first tweet: The first sentence of your thread is the difference between a thread that goes viral and one that dies in the feed. You’ve got to make it irresistible. You can’t just start with “Here’s what I learned...” That’s boring. Instead, lead with something that hits hard and gets people curious.
    • Example: "I made $50K in sales last month with zero ad spend—here’s exactly how you can do the same." That kind of hook makes people think, “Wait, what? How did they do that?” It’s all about creating that sense of urgency to keep reading.
  • Learn headline writing: If you want your threads to perform, you need to study headlines. Good headlines are the secret to getting people to click, read, and engage. You want to use phrases that trigger curiosity, promise a solution, or offer a step-by-step breakdown. Focus on time-saving, efficiency, or clear benefits in your headlines. People want to know how to achieve something faster, with less effort, or with more money at the end. For example:
    • "How I increased my revenue by 30% in just 60 days without spending a dime on ads."
    • "The 3-step process I used to get 1,000 Twitter followers in a week."

Notice how these headlines are specific and they promise a result. That’s what gets people interested. You’re telling them, “Stick around, and I’m going to show you exactly how to get results.” Your thread's performance lives or dies by the strength of your first tweet and headline. Master this, and you’ll have followers eating up your content.

Step 10: Repurpose Content for Maximum Reach

You don’t have to reinvent the wheel with every tweet. One of the smartest ways to grow on Twitter is by repurposing your best content. If a tweet worked before, why wouldn’t it work again? People forget quickly, so don’t hesitate to rework and repost your top-performing tweets.

  • Rework your best tweets: Take your high-performing tweets from 3+ months ago, and reword them. It’s simple—find what resonated with your audience and give it a fresh spin. You can update the language, adjust the tone, or even tweak the examples to make it feel new. People who missed it the first time around will engage, and those who saw it before will appreciate the reminder.
    • Example: If you tweeted, “How I closed a $10K deal using nothing but cold emails,” you can rework it a few months later as,Cold emails are still the #1 way to close $10K+ deals—here’s how I do it.” Same core message, just refreshed.
  • Use Twitter’s advanced search: This is a goldmine. Use Twitter’s advanced search to find your best-performing tweets by looking for those that got 300+ likes or more. This helps you understand what content worked and how to repurpose it. You can also use it to scope out other accounts and see what kind of tweets performed well for them. Inspiration is everywhere—you just have to look for it.

Pro Tip: Don’t just rely on your own ideas. When you’re stuck, search for other people’s top tweets in your niche. Reword their ideas with your own spin. You’re not copying—you’re taking proven strategies and making them better.

Step 11: Monetize Your Twitter Profile

Alright, this is where it gets real. If you’re serious about making money on Twitter, you’ve got to monetize your profileevery opportunity counts. Here’s the deal: every tweet, every interaction, should be pushing people closer to your offer, your product, or your service.

  • Always have a call-to-action (CTA): I can’t stress this enough—if you’re not pointing people somewhere, you’re leaving money on the table. In 80% of your tweets, you should have a CTA. This could be linking to your landing page, plugging your product, or guiding them to your service. Don’t make people guess what you want them to do. You’ve got to tell them.
    • Example: “Want to scale your agency to $100K/month? Click here for a free training that will show you how to do it.” Notice the focus? It’s clear, direct, and tells them exactly what to do next. Whether it’s buying your product, signing up for your service, or following you for more, call them to action.
  • Keep your offers visible: Your audience might not catch your offer the first time you tweet about it. So, don’t let those posts fade into the background. Bring them back into the spotlight by retweeting your key promotional tweets regularly. Twitter’s fast-paced nature means people can easily miss important updates, so make sure you’re reminding them by reviving your best-performing tweets. The more they see it, the more likely they’ll take action.

If you’re not using Twitter to monetize, what’s the point? You’ve put in the work to grow your audience—now it’s time to make that money. Every tweet is an opportunity to drive traffic to your offer, so don’t miss out.

Step 12: Scale Up and Sell

Now it’s time to stop playing small and actually make money. Once you’ve built a solid following, your next move is to funnel that audience toward your offer. Twitter is a powerful tool, but only if you use it strategically to monetize.

  • Point followers to your product: Every tweet is an opportunity to guide your followers toward your landing page, email opt-in, or direct sales page. You’ve already built up trust by delivering value and engaging with your audience, so now you need to show them where they can go to get more from you. Whether it’s a course, coaching, or a digital product, always include calls to action in your content that leads people to take the next step.
    • Example: “Want to learn how to scale your business to $100K/month? Click here to get my free guide and start today.” Simple, direct, and clear on what they’re getting.
  • Create a clear funnel: Don’t expect people to just figure out what you’re offering. You need a smooth path that takes them from your tweets to your landing page, and eventually to a purchase. Whether you’re using Twitter to build an email list or sending them straight to a sales page, the key is to be consistent. Mention your offer regularly, and don’t be afraid to plug your product in multiple tweets.

Pro Tip: Drive traffic to a specific place (landing page, sales page, etc.) in a sequence. For example, tease your offer in one tweet, link to it in another, and follow up with a testimonial or success story.

At the end of the day, if you’re not selling on Twitter, you’re missing out on real opportunities to make money. Your followers are your audience, and your tweets should always lead them toward monetizing actions.
